Aimless spam

Spam is always pointless, but has anyone else noticed an increasing trend in seemingly “aimless” spam? I’m talking about spam which doesn’t seem to exist for any purpose than to simply fill up your inbox. It’ll have links to safe, everyday sites (like docs.google.com or some University’s website).
It’s like they’re not even trying anymore.
